On Thursday, January 25, 2024, Randolph Central School (RCS) united for the 11th Annual Cards Against Cancer fundraising event, a cherished tradition that has raised over $55,000 in previous years to support local families. Originating in 2013 for a mother of RCS students who was diagnosed with cancer and her family, the event garnered overwhelming generosity and support, leading to its establishment as an annual affair with the goal of aiding multiple families during difficult times. The funds raised are housed in the Randolph Community Love Fund (RCLF).
This year, the Student Council selected John Adams, a longstanding member of the Randolph community and an RCS alum. In the fall of 2023, John suffered a traumatic brain injury in a logging accident. John and his wife Melissa, an RCS employee, are well-known for their active involvement in the community and willingness to extend a helping hand.
Under the guidance of their dedicated advisor, Mrs. Debbie Luce, the Student Council diligently planned and collected donations for months. All RCS athletes are asked to contribute to the Cards Against Cancer fundraiser by assisting with selling raffle tickets prior to the main event and gathering donations. On the day of the event, student council students and athletes play a pivotal role in setting up and managing the large basket raffle, pie auction, and Soup Bar showcasing their commitment to the cause.
The Cards Against Cancer Fundraiser strategically coincides with a JV and Varsity Basketball home game annually. When Shawn Huntington, RCS Athletic Director stated, “Through this event, our student athletes learn profound lessons about the power of unity, compassion, and community. It teaches them that the true measure of success lies not only in athletic achievements but also in the ability to use their platform to make a meaningful difference. The game becomes a poignant reminder that, together, we can turn the adversities of life into opportunities for growth, resilience, and positive change. Our athletes emerge not only as formidable competitors but as compassionate individuals who understand the transformative power of sports in the service of a greater cause.”
This year witnessed an overwhelming number of donations, including over 120 baskets and baked goods. The main raffle was for a chance to win one of three triaxle loads of firewood grade logs donated by Harley Davis, HD Logging LLC and Adams Logging Company.
Setting an ambitious goal of $15,000 for the Adams family, the Student Council, along with help from the Randolph community and surrounding areas, not only achieved but exceeded their goal. Kameron Luce, Student Council President, expressed her emotions, stating, “I will never forget the feeling when our advisor announced the amount raised, and the entire crowd erupted into cheers. The pride and sense of accomplishment I felt at that moment is something I will remember for the rest of my life.” This year's fundraiser marked the most successful one to date, raising $21,500. The funds will assist the Adams family in covering travel and recovery expenses as John continues his rehabilitation at the Erie County Medical Center.
The RCS Student Council would like to thank everyone who supported this year's event. The community support and generosity prove that every day is a great day to be a cardinal! "This event embodies the true spirit of Randolph, where our school and community unite to support one of their own. The selfless dedication displayed in organizing the Cards vs. Cancer fundraiser each year is truly impressive and sets a remarkable example which is worthy of emulation." - Superintendent Kaine Kelly
